Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Woodstock '99

During Under the Bridge at Woodstock ‘99, organizers handed out over 100.000 candles, a so-called “symbol of peace” after a wave of shootings in the U.S.

But the crowd had had enough.

Three days of overpriced water, overflowing toilets, no shade, and nonstop aggression had turned peace into rage.

As the Red Hot Chili Peppers played, small flames started flickering in the crowd.

Within minutes, fire spread across the field.

Towers burned. Vendor tents collapsed. Chaos took over.

Anthony Kiedis later said they were told to “calm the crowd”. Instead, they launched into Fire by Jimi Hendrix.

By midnight, the peace candles had turned into torches.

The festival site was destroyed. MTV pulled their crew.

What was meant as a tribute to love and unity ended as one of the biggest disasters in music history.

Would you run or join the chaos?
